On November 28, as the undersea tunnel was completed, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link celebrated the completion of its main section after seven years of construction.
Stretching over 24 kilometers, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a mega project that integrates a bridge, island, tunnel, and underwater interchange. The smooth completion of the main section highlights China's leading advantage and technological prowess in the construction of cross-sea bridges.
The undersea tunnel of the project is approximately 5,035 meters in length, consisting of 32 immersed pipe sections and one final joint. It stands as the world's longest and widest underwater steel shell concrete tunnel.
The single standard pipe section is 165 meters long and weighs nearly 80,000 tons, which is the heaviest steel shell concrete pipe section in the world. The main tower of Lingdingyang Bridge is 270 meters high, equivalent to the height of a 90-story building, which is the highest sea bridge tower in the world, and the Lingdingyang Bridge is therefore the highest sea bridge in the world.
Upon its opening in 2024, the travel time from Shenzhen to Zhongshan will be reduced from the original 2 hours to less than 30 minutes, effectively promoting industrial interconnection between both sides of the Pearl River and the deep integration development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
