Recently, 50 primary and secondary school students from various schools in Kenya's the Mathare Slum visited the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), engaging in a meaningful educational tour on railway technology. The event was organized by Afristar, in collaboration with the local NGO, Dream Building Service Association(DBSA).
At the operations control center, the students learned about the train scheduling and freight logistics processes. They then traveled to the Nairobi station, where they gained insight into ticketing, boarding, and other aspects of passenger service operations. The students were thrilled to explore the SGR's platforms and train carriages.
Loice Abanga, the staff of the DBSA, expressed gratitude to Afristar for providing this unique experience. She noted that many of the children were seeing modern railway facilities for the first time, and the advanced operational model of the SGR made a lasting impression on them.
The students also thanked Afristar for organizing the event, saying that it gave them the opportunity to learn about railway systems beyond what they had read in textbooks. They were eager to share their newfound knowledge with their families and classmates.
The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway's public open day is part of Afristar's corporate social responsibility initiative. It offers an immersive experience for local schoolchildren, community groups, and academic think tanks, aiming to help the younger generation in Kenya understand the development trends and advancements in the country's transportation sector.
