At Matulani Junior Secondary School in Mtito Andei, a town along Kenya's Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, students crowd around a computer screen, listening intently as their teacher, Mr. Kilonzo, walks them through the lesson.
In early 2024, Afristar donated school furniture, computers, printers, and backpacks to three schools, including Matulani Junior Secondary School, reaching over 5,200 students. More than a year later, when AfriStar volunteers revisited the school, they were greeted by this heartwarming scene — children immersed in learning through technology.
To the students, the computers are the most precious gift they have ever received — a key that opens the door to the world. "Computers make learning easier and bring the world closer," said Lilliane, a fifth-grade student.
For ninth-grader Michell, computers have already become part of daily study and life. "These computers have brought tremendous changes to our school," he said.
The teachers also feel the change. Mr. Kilonzo said that computer lessons used to be theoretical, but now he can truly guide his students into the digital world.
"The support from Afristar has transformed not only the children's lives but the whole community," said the school's headteacher. Students come here because of the computers. They are using the internet to explore endless possibilities for themselves and their future.
