In addition to bulk container freight trains, the service provides a new option for small, frequent, and time-sensitive shipments along the route, marking another step forward in the integration of passenger and freight operations on the key trunk line in East Africa.

On June 16, train N2 on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) departs with an added baggage car.

Since its opening on May 31, 2017, the SGR has become the preferred mode of transport for the Kenyan public, thanks to its safety, efficiency, comfort, and affordability. By May 31, 2026, it had handled a total of 18.181 million passenger trips and transported 48.604 million tonnes of freight.

From construction through operation, the railway has created about 74,000 jobs and trained more than 2,800 local railway technicians, with a localization rate of 94 percent in operations.

From May 31 to June 13, Africa Star Railway Operation Company, together with Kenya Railways, organized a series of events in Nairobi Terminus, Mombasa Terminus, and Suswa Station to mark the 9th anniversary of safe operations of the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR and the 130th anniversary of the Kenya-Uganda Railway.
