The successful rehabilitation of the section restores a key westbound transport corridor in Kenya and reopens the only rail link connecting the country to inland neighbors such as Uganda.

Rail services between Uplands and Longonot on Kenya's meter gauge railway have officially resumed after an 18-month suspension. Philip Mainga, Managing Director of Kenya Railways Corporation, attended the reopening ceremony at Kijabe station.
In the first half of 2024, rare and prolonged heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and other geological hazards that severely damaged multiple sections of the railway, forcing the line to suspend operations. The disruption had a significant impact on cross-border logistics, passenger travel and regional economic activity.
CRBC carried out emergency repair and restoration works. Despite adverse weather conditions and other challenges, the project team prioritized safety and quality to ensure steady progress.
