A recent media open day highlighted the ecological restoration project in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. As China's first large-scale mangrove–aquaculture integration model, it demonstrates how ecological protection and economic development can go hand in hand.
The project restores mangroves around Jinniu Island across 546 hectares, planting about 5.9 million trees. It also upgraded 3.02 kilometers of seaward concrete seawalls with eco-friendly designs.
Centered on mangrove restoration, the model combines ecological aquaculture and a circular system, creating a mutually beneficial cycle: mangroves protect fish habitats, and aquaculture supports mangrove growth.
After restoration, the wetlands now support diverse fish and bird species. Ecological aquaculture has boosted local industries and created new income sources for coastal communities.
Beyond promoting green development, the project offers a replicable model for coastal ecological governance, supporting Zhanjiang's goal to become the City of Mangroves.
