As of now, the Genting TBM 1 has tunneled over 8,000 meters, and the Genting TBM 2 is set to surpass 9,000 meters.

Recently, the Genting tunnel in the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has achieved a major milestone, with nearly 1.7 kilometers of tunnel excavation completed. Additionally, the track-laying work from the Maran to Kota Bharu section, spanning approximately 400 kilometers, has been successfully finished.
The Genting tunnel is a key project, crossing the a mountain range in the northeastern part of Kuala Lumpur. This twin-bore, single-track tunnel spans 16.4 kilometers and, upon completion, will become the longest tunnel in Southeast Asia. The excavation is carried out simultaneously using two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). As of now, the Genting TBM 1 has tunneled over 8,000 meters, and the Genting TBM 2 is set to surpass 9,000 meters.
Kota Bharu is the starting point of the ECRL project. The rail-laying process introduces China’s latest and most advanced digital control systems, technologies, and construction expertise from CSCEC, aiming to foster the development of local railway construction and operational talent in Malaysia.
