Recently, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel constructed by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has received the take-over certificate by the owner Bangladesh Bridge Bureau, marking the completion of the preliminary inspection and handover of the project.
The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel – also known as the Karnaphuli River Tunnel – is located at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, Bangladesh, connecting the east and west banks of the Karnaphuli River. The project started in December 2017 and is designed and constructed according to Chinese specifications. It spans a total length of 9.3 kilometers, with the shield tunnel section consisting of two tunnels, each with four lanes, measuring 2,450 meters in length and 11.8 meters in diameter.
This project marks CCCC's first overseas large-diameter underwater shield tunnel project, and is also the first tunnel in Bangladesh and the first underwater tunnel in South Asia. The project is also an important pivot project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and an important part of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor.
The completion of the project has greatly improved the transportation conditions of Chittagong, driven the regional economic development of Bangladesh and promoted the interconnection between Bangladesh and neighboring countries.
