Recently, a ceremony was held at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to mark the completion of runway pavement for the Three-runway System (3RS) project, which was built by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd..

The 3800-meter-long and 60-meter-wide runway was paved by multilayer materials around one-meter-thick. Besides, the runway was surfaced with special asphaltic materials to ensure that it is elastic enough to bear damage and landing pressure caused by different airplanes. The third runway will come in to service in 2022.

Construction of the project began in August 2016, with over 650 hectares of land north of HKIA reclaimed for the expansion project. Other facets of the project include the expansion of Terminal 2 (T2), the construction of T2 concourse, an airport pavement, a new automated people mover system and high-speed baggage handling system, and improvement of existing road network and traffic facilities. All the works will be completed in 2024 and the 3RS system is expected to be ready in the same year. At that time, passenger and cargo volume of HKIA will increase immensely, which will help Hong Kong shore up its position as an international air transportation hub and boost the socio-economic development of the region.
