Construction recently began on the Semongkong Microgrid Upgrade Project in Lesotho, undertaken by CWE. Lesotho Prime Minister Sam Matekane attended and addressed the launch ceremony.

Matekane said the project will make full use of local hydropower and solar resources to provide reliable, clean and affordable electricity to remote areas, improving power supply, people's well-being and economic development.

Located in Semongkong, Maseru District, the project includes rehabilitating and upgrading an existing 190-kilowatt small hydropower station, building a new 1-megawatt solar photovoltaic power station, installing a 1.5-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, and upgrading the power distribution network.

The project aims to establish a power source-grid-load-storage microgrid and smart energy dispatch platform, enabling automatic frequency and voltage regulation across multiple power sources, as well as peak shaving and valley filling. Once completed, it will significantly ease local power shortages, improve the stability and intelligence of the regional power system, promote a clean and low-carbon energy transition, and support sustainable local development.
