Asia's largest cutter suction dredger begins operations at Nansha Phase IV terminal

On May 15, "the Junguang," the largest cutter suction dredger, built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC), officially entered service for the Nansha Phase IV terminal in Guangzhou. This marks a new stage in China's dredging equipment, characterized by super-large hopper capacity, full-process intelligence, green and low-carbon technologies.
The vessel is 198 meters long, 38.5 meters wide, with a maximum dredging depth of 120 meters and a discharge distance exceeding 12 kilometers. Its maximum hopper capacity is 38,528 cubic meters, ranking second in the world and first in Asia. Construction began in June 2024, and it was launched in August 2025.
Combining intelligence, efficiency, versatility, and environmental friendliness, "the Junguang" represents the latest achievement in China's high-end marine engineering equipment and is hailed as an all-rounder in dredging, achieving full-process automated operations and over 20 percent higher efficiency.
The ship has unlimited global navigation capability and can operate stably in level-eight wind and waves. Under normal conditions, its hopper fills in 90 minutes, with a single dredge-and-fill operation able to raise a standard football field by five meters.
Once the Nansha Phase IV terminal is completed, it will accommodate the world's largest container ships, greatly enhancing Guangzhou Port's competitiveness as a global shipping hub.
