As of December 31, 2025, the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), known as East Africa's "steel artery," achieved record passenger and freight volumes. Annual passenger trips reached 2.715 million, up 11.0% year on year, while freight volume hit 7.871 million tonnes, an increase of 13.8%.
The railway is now a top choice for intercity travel. Freight shipments of key goods—including grain, steel, and fertilizers—grew significantly. The introduction of refrigerated container services has lowered local logistics costs.
Since its launch on May 31, 2017, the railway has carried 17.093 million passengers and transported 45.072 million tonnes of cargo. By delivering safe, reliable, and efficient service, it continues to drive economic development across East Africa.
