Recently, at the 2025 International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA) Tunneling Awards held in Belgrade, Serbia, CCCC won three major honors. The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link Immersed Tunnel received the "Major Project of the Year Gold Award;" the Shanghai Suburban Railway Airport Link was awarded the "Major Project of the Year Silver Award;" and the Tunnel Iriški Venac of the Novi Sad-Ruma Expressway Project earned the "Outstanding Underground Space Solution Award."
Founded in 1974, the ITA is the world's most authoritative academic organization in the field of tunneling and underground engineering. Since its establishment in 2015, the ITA Tunneling Awards have been globally recognized as the "Oscars" of the tunneling and underground space industry.
Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link Immersed Tunnel: Major Project of the Year Gold Award
The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan in Guangdong Province, spanning about 24 kilometers. Built to an eight-lane expressway standard, it is a world-class cross-sea cluster integrating bridge, island, tunnel, and underwater interchange. The project pioneered innovative construction techniques and developed key equipment such as the integrated transport and installation vessel and the gravel bed leveling ship, providing a new solution for the final joint closure of immersed tunnels and overcoming several world-class engineering challenges. Opened to traffic on June 30, 2024, the project further enhances the transportation network of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and stands as a milestone showcasing China's infrastructure capabilities.
Shanghai Suburban Railway Airport Link: Major Project of the Year Silver Award
The Shanghai Rail Transit Airport Link Line extends 68.6 kilometers with a design speed of 160 km/h, achieving rapid 40-minute connectivity between Shanghai's two major international airports — Hongqiao and Pudong. CCCC deployed three self-developed super-large-diameter shield tunneling machines, overcoming multiple technical challenges and significantly improving construction efficiency.
Tunnel Iriški Venac of the Novi Sad-Ruma Expressway Project: Outstanding Underground Space Solution Award
The Tunnel Iriški Venac, part of the Novi Sad–Ruma Expressway Project, won the Outstanding Underground Space Solution Award for its innovative strategies in addressing complex geological conditions and its exemplary environmental construction practices. The 3.5-kilometer tunnel will be the longest in Serbia upon completion, setting a new benchmark for underground engineering in Eastern Europe. During the awards ceremony, the ITA organized a field visit for nearly 100 tunneling experts from around the world. The expert delegation highly commended the project's technical excellence, management efficiency, and environmental achievements.
