The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, constructed by CRBC, not only drives regional economic development but also serves as a model for integrating infrastructure with ecological conservation in Africa.
Connecting Kenya's eastern port city of Mombasa and the capital Nairobi, the railway officially opened on May 31, 2017. As of August 16, 2025, it has been in safe operation for 3,000 days, transporting 15.93 million passengers and 41.96 million tons of cargo.
From design to operation and maintenance, the project has placed ecological preservation at its core. Wildlife corridors and vegetation restoration zones along the railway ensure a harmonious coexistence between transportation infrastructure and nature.
Wilson Njue, Director of the Kenya Wildlife Service and Senior Warden of Tsavo East National Park & Attorney General said, they have been monitoring the situation and found that wildlife has now adapted to using these underground passages. They can freely cross to the other side of the park at any time.
Moreover, according to the World Bank, shifting cargo transport from roads to rail can reduce carbon emissions by over 20,200 tons per million tons of cargo. Since the railway began operations, it has helped cut down approximately 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
