Recently, at the 2025 IRF Global Road Achievement Awards ceremony held in Athens, Greece, the Beijing East Sixth Ring Road Underground Reconstruction Project Through the Urban Core, submitted by CCCC, won the IRF 2025 Awards on Rural Roads and Mobility.
Founded in 1948, the International Road Federation (IRF) is a leading academic organization in the global road sector. The IRF awards recognize outstanding achievements, initiatives, and technologies in road transportation, promoting innovation, sustainability, and safety in the field.
The reconstruction project covers approximately 16.3 kilometers, expanding the existing dual four-lane carriageway to six lanes, with a shield tunnel section of about 7.4 kilometers. By integrating an elevated high line park above ground with underground traffic, the project reconnects urban space while expanding road capacity, serving as a global reference model for urban road and transport development.
Since its opening on April 20 this year, the route has carried more than 2.5 million vehicles, boosting traffic capacity by 30%. Meanwhile, the conversion of the former roadbed into a elevated high line park will raise the area's green coverage from 50% to 80%, providing residents with new spaces for leisure and cultural activities.
