The Maldives has officially designated August 30, the opening date of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, as National Engineers' Day.

According to a statement from the President's Office, selecting August 30 pays tribute to the largest infrastructure project in Maldivian history: the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge linking the capital city Male, Hulhumale, and Velana International Airport.
Spanning two kilometers with four lanes in both directions, the bridge marked the end of the Maldives' history without an ocean-crossing structure while pioneering the construction of mega cross-sea bridges atop deep-sea coral reef geology globally. It has greatly improved local transportation accessibility and accelerated socio-economic development in the Maldives.
