Kenya: Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway sees record freight volumes in January 2025

In January 2025, the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya set a new freight volume record, surpassing 678,000 tons, marking the highest single-month freight volume since its inauguration in 2017. This achievement significantly boosts Kenya's and East Africa's economic growth.
Faced with a surge in freight demand in the new year, the Afristar took multiple measures to ensure smooth and safe railway operations. The company also worked to improve the efficiency of port-to-rail transport connections, enabling seamless sea-rail intermodal integration.
Since its opening, the railway has transported more than 37 million tons of goods.
