A survey conducted in June 2023 revealed that the breakwater's coral species had reached 73, with 114 species of fish identified.

As Sri Lanka's first futuristic planned city, green sustainability lies at the heart of Colombo Port City's development. Silva, an environmentalist in Sri Lanka, stated that the breakwaters constructed by Chinese builders in the Port City provide suitable habitats for nearby coral reefs to grow and thrive. In December 2019, during a snorkeling trip, he discovered vast coral reefs and schools of fish. Subsequently, he regularly monitors the growth of corals and fish in the area and have observed an improvement in the environment.
A survey conducted in June 2023 revealed that the breakwater's coral species had reached 73, with 114 species of fish identified. Rare species such as humphead wrasse were also discovered. The average coverage of coral on the breakwater reached 24.36%, with some areas reaching up to 60%. This has significant implications for ecological conservation in Sri Lanka and provides valuable lessons for environmental protection in other countries.
