Recently, Afristar, the operator of the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, received heartfelt letters of gratitude from children at Hope Baptist School in Nairobi's Mathare district. In their own words, they shared how something as simple as a daily meal has given them hope.
At the beginning of 2025, Afristar, together with the Dream Building Service Association(DBSA), launched a program to provide free breakfast and lunch throughout the year for all 220 students at Hope Baptist School. The initiative aims to help children pursue their education consistently.
Rebecca Adhiambo, a 12-year-old fifth grader wrote that hunger used to make it hard for her to concentrate in class. Thanks to Afristar, she can now attend school regularly. Her dream is to become a lawyer.
Ten-year-old Angeline Apondi shared: "Having breakfast and lunch every day has changed my life. I can now focus on learning without worrying about hunger. I study hard because I want to be a doctor and make the world a better place."
Fourteen-year-old Nandutu added: "I love learning, because I know it is the key to changing my future. What Afristar has given us is more than food—it is hope. It allows me to stay focused, stay healthy, and dream bigger."
