Connecting the capital Malé and the airport island, the bridge spans a total length of 2,000 meters and was opened to traffic in August 2018. The opening of the project resolved the century-old challenge of relying solely on ferries for commuting between the core islands of the Maldives. It pioneered the construction of mega-bridges on coral reef geologies and in exposed deep-sea oceanic environments.
