the Karnaphuli River Tunnel in Bangladesh

South Asia's first underwater tunnel

Located at the estuary of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, the project spans a total length of 9.3 kilometers, with an underground section of 3.3 kilometers. The tunnel features an inner diameter of 10.8 meters and a dual-tube design. The construction utilized a shield tunneling machine independently developed and manufactured by CCCC, which also marks China's first exported ultra-large diameter shield machine. Once completed, the project will help enhance the Asian Highway Network, facilitate connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries, and generate a positive impact on the local economy.
