Deep-water channel improvement project on the Yangtze River
A global model for estuary management
As the largest dredging initiative in China's history to date, this project encompassed the regulation of the estuary's deep-water channel and the construction of a 12.5-meter deep-water channel below Nanjing. Construction began in 1998 and concluded in 2010, delivering a 92.2-kilometer dual-way deep-water navigation route. The 12.5-meter draft allowance successfully enables the passage of 50,000-ton container vessels.
