Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway

The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya, constructed and operated by CCCC, represents Kenya's first new railway in over a century. Stretching from Mombasa, East Africa's largest port, to Nairobi, the capital city, and extending northwest to Suswa station, the railway covers a total distance of 592 kilometers, all built to Chinese standards. It stands as one of the significant achievements of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative between China and Kenya. The railway commenced operations on May 31, 2017, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Kenya's development.
By January 2024, the passenger volume of the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway had increased by 17.9% compared to 2023, reaching a new high of 2.73 million passengers. Freight volume has continued to rise, with a total of 6.53 million tons of goods transported, exceeding the 6.01 million tons in 2022. Due to the reliability, convenience, and affordability of the railway, an increasing number of people are choosing to travel by train, making trains an important mode of transportation for passengers in Kenya.
