Kenyan President inaugurates the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service in Kenya

The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service in Kenya, a small yet important livelihood project built by CRBC, has been completed and officially opened. Kenyan President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Minister of Roads and Transport Davis Chirchir attended the inauguration ceremony.
President William Ruto remarked that as an urban commuter railway, the project will provide passengers with convenient and efficient transport services, while supporting Mombasa's role as a gateway hub for trade and commerce in Africa.
First built in 1896, the project extends 16.8 kilometers, including the building of a 2.9-kilometer railway bridge across the ocean at Makupa.
The project links the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) with the existing meter-gauge network, reducing travel time from downtown Mombasa to Mombasa Station from one hour to just 30 minutes. Fares are also significantly reduced, effectively solving the last mile problem for local commuters.
During construction, the project generated about 800 annual jobs and provided skills training to improve local workers' technical abilities.
