China-Maldives Friendship Bridge marks seventh anniversary of opening

The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, built by CCCC, has celebrated its seventh anniversary of opening.
Spanning the capital Male, the Male Valona International Airport, and Hulhumale, the bridge has not only transformed daily life for Maldivians but also become a powerful driver of regional economic growth.
Since opening, it has reduced the one-hour boat trip across the channel to just a five-minute drive. Over the past seven years, the bridge has carried more than 100 million passengers, with an average daily traffic of around 45,000.
August 30, the date of the bridge's opening, was officially designated National Engineers'Day earlier this year, paying tribute to the country's largest infrastructure project in history.

On Hulhumale—one of the islands connected by the bridge—new buildings now line the skyline. Today, the island is home to more than 35,000 housing units with capacity for over 340,000 residents, helping to relieve the housing shortage in the capital Male.
In October 2024, the Maldivian government also inaugurated a memorial park dedicated to the bridge's construction, providing residents with a place to learn about its history and symbolizing the enduring friendship between China and the Maldives.
