To revent wind erosion of sand dunes, CCCC built more than 10 million square meters of fishtail sandbags and planted hundreds of thousands of red willows in the grid of the sand belt. During the construction, the project department took the initiative to protect the poplar trees, sacsaoul and camel thorn. Meanwhile, to facilitate the migration of camels and sheep, CCCC erected more than 400 channel bridges and culverts and more than 300 kilometers of protection fences.

With a total length of more than 2,800 kilometers, the expressway is the world's longest expressway in desert with the highest grade. On June 30, 2021, the expressway Wutongdaquan to Mubi section was officially opened to traffic, marking the completion of the expressway. The opening of Beijing-Urumqi Expressway has served as the fastest and most convenient corridor from northern China into Xinjiang, and opened up the most rapid sea access between Horgos to Tianjin in northern China.
