Total traffic volume of Kenya's Nairobi Expressway reaches 10 million vehicles

The Nairobi Expressway has attracted more international investment to Kenya, helping Kenya to become the economic, transportation, diplomatic and tourism hub in East Africa.

After 268 days of operation, the total traffic volume of the Nairobi Expressway in Kenya has exceeded 10 million vehicles. A celebration ceremony was held on February 7 in Nairobi. Joseph Mungai Mbugua, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Roads of Kenya, and Kungu Ndungu, Director-General of Kenya National Highways Authority, attended the event upon invitation.
Mbugua said at the ceremony that the Nairobi Expressway invested by CRBC, a subsidiary of CCCC, has significantly reduced traffic congestion in Nairobi, lowered logistics costs and boosted economic development. At the same time, it has attracted more international investment to Kenya, helping Kenya to become the economic, transportation, and tourism hub in the East Africa.
Ndungu also gave high recognition to the success of the Nairobi Expressway and expressed his appreciation to the project team for their efforts in ETC promotion and mobile payment.
The 27.1-kilometer Nairobi Expressway is Kenya's first toll road and was launched on 14 May 2022 for trial operation and officially opened on 31 July.
As of 6 February 2023, the total number of ETCs issued on the Nairobi Expressway exceeded 120,000, and the percentage of ETC users increased from 26.8% at the start of the operation to 70%; the highest single-day traffic volume exceeded 63,000 vehicles. The Nairobi Expressway has become the most important way for transportation in the region.
