The comprehensive development project of Lingshan Island, a cooperation between CCCC's subsidiary CCCC Urban Investment Holding Co. Ltd.and the People's Government of Nansha District of Guangzhou, covers land leveling, municipal infrastructure, urban flood control and drainage and water system engineering, and public service facilities within a 3.5 square kilometer area of Lingshan Island. The project will build a smart new city integrating modern elements such as sponge city and ecological embankment.
Located at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, Nansha is susceptible to floods and typhoon surging from the Pearl River. The drainage system of the rivers at Lingshan Island should consider not only the flood season and the tidal law, but also the water storage and water purification functions of a sponge city.
First of all, the "big and small sponges" adjust the absorption, ensure the water ecological environment in the area, and realize the integration of the waterfront and the urban space. "Big Sponge" consists of five sluices and one pumping station built on the coast, forming an area waterlogging prevention system that combines river regulation and storage, sluice self-draining and pumping and drainage. The "big sponge" was built with a standard that it can drain a 24-hour rainfallonce in 50 years. The "little sponge" is the sponge factor that replaces the pipe and canal system such as ripple gardens, ecological grass slopes, ecological parking lots, sunken green spaces and roof greening distributed on the island, which has greatly improved the ability of regional waterlogging prevention and control.

Secondly, the 6-kilometer-long ecological embankment uses self-embedded bottle-hole bricks during construction, creating a city-sea landscape with flowers in four seasons, clear water and beaches, and flocks of fish and gulls. While enhancing the overall anti-scour ability of the slope protection, the plants planted in the holes can also make the slope protection surface green and become a cave for the coastal cave animals. The construction team used amphibious ecological restoration technology to recreate the ecological system of birds, fish, tidal flats, and micro mangroves, forming a green bank protection system. It has improved and restored the ecological environment of the riverside on Lingshan Island, not only improving the overall landscape effect, but also played an active role in carbon sequestration, oxygen release, water purification, wave elimination and shore protection, and improvement of animal habitats.

What's more, the project team has followed the concept of "ventilation" during the construction of supporting public facilities such as the underground space at Lingshan Island and the utility tunnelto comprehensively improve urban air circulation. At the same time, an energy station withan ice storage + electric cooling system was built at the load center. It will supply central cooling service to the complex and surrounding office and living areas of 415,000 square meters, which can achieve an annual carbon reduction of 4,537 tons.
"What we are building is not just a city, but a park with ecological, green, ethical, livable, workable, and travel-friendly features. By integrating architectural aesthetics with greenness and ecology, the project offers local people a natural and poetic garden life," said the project leader.
