The completion ceremony for the southern tunnel of the Karnaphuli Tunnel
Sheikh Hasina pointed out that the opening of the Karnaphuli Tunnel will greatly promote the economic development of Chittagong and make Chittagong the economic capital of Bangladesh.
The total planning area of the industrial park in Mirsarai is about 136.8 square kilometers (mostly reclaimed land), and the whole park has 24 kilometers of coastline along the Bay of Bengal. CCCC is responsible for the projects in coastal protection, sluice gate, housing works, road works, land development and water treatment plant. 82% of the project has been completed. Since the park will be the largest industrial park in Bangladesh and the largest economic park in South Asia after completion, it will provide 1.5 million jobs for Bangladesh in the next 15 years.
The Karnaphuli Tunnel is located at the estuary of Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, Bangladesh, linking the east and west banks of the river. It is designed and constructed with Chinese specifications, with a total length of 9.3 kilometers. As a dual-bore, four-lane tunnel, the tunnel section is 2450 meters long and 11.8 meters in diameter. This project is the first under-river tunnel in Bangladesh and the first underwater tunnel in South Asia. The completion of the project is of great significance to improve the highway network in Asia, promote the connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries, and promote the development of Bangladesh.
