On July 16, a consortium comprising John Holland and world-renowned enterprises won the bid for Melbourne Metro PPP Project with a total contract value of AUD 6,000 million.

As the largest-ever integrated public transport project in the State of Victoria, the project will bring the city center of Melbourne advanced railway network and urban development design, and create more than 5,000 jobs. With a 30% stake in the consortium, John Holland will play an important role in project design, construction, development and maintenance.

The project involves the construction of two nine-kilometer tunnels stretching from Kensington to South Yarra and crossing the Yarra River at the bottom, as well as the construction of five distinctive subway stations in the city center. The project will present wider platforms, more natural light, more open ground areas and more flexible incoming and outgoing channels, to ease the pedestrian traffic pressure of the city center. With a construction period of about five or six years, the main works are expected to commence in 2017.

The successful bid shows the significant effect of John Holland's transformation from a contractor into an investor, developer and constructor. This will play a critical role in establishing the market position of John Holland in Australia after it was acquired by CCCC.
