Tunnel boring machine arrives in Malaysia
The first of two tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) in Malaysia has arrived on July 9. It will spearhead the excavation works for the 16.39 km twin-bore Genting Tunnel. The TBM was customized by CCCC Tianhe Mechanical Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. according to the complicated geological conditions of the tunnel.
With its cutterhead measuring 8.98 meters in diameter, the equipment weighs 2,500 tons and has a length of 270 meters, which will advance the tunnel construction through rapid tunneling. The other TBM for the project, also developed by the company, has already set off and will arrive in Malaysia in a few days.
The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) under construction by CCCC travels from Port Klang on the West Coast of Malaysia to Kuantan Port on the East Coast. Stretching 640 km, it is expected to give a boost to the economy on the East Coast and enhance regional connectivity after completion.
