Volume of cargo transported on the SGR jumps in February
The volume of cargo transported on the Kenya standard gauge railway (SGR) jumped 28 percent in February 2021 compared to the same period last year, mainly due to the introduction of double decker loading.
Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) disclosed 23,040 TEUs of cargo was carried on the SGR in February 2021, up from 17,974 TEUs in February 2020. According to last month’s performance, an average of 8.2 trains carried over 800 TEUs per day (230 trains) during February, against some 210 freight trains that were reported to have made the trip in February 2020.
In terms of conventional cargo, CRBC’s subsidiary, also the SGR operator Africa Star Railway Operation Company delivered 128,291 metric tonnes of bulk wheat to Nairobi in February 2021, a staggering increase when compared to the 3,897 metric tonnes delivered during February of last year.
